 Marketing and Public Relations Intern (10-40 hours per week)


Get great book marketing experience this summer (plus perks)!


OBJECTIVE: Provide marketing support for a self-published book, "Writing to Make a Difference," to be released in late summer 2009. The target market consists of those working or volunteering in socially responsible organizations.


DATES AND HOURS: June -August (or longer), 10-40 hours per week. Most tasks can be performed day or evening hours. Exact dates and times are negotiable.


LOCATION: Intern can work from a home computer/wireless laptop, but he/she must be available to meet regularly by phone. Writer is in Oakland, CA and is also open to working together in person.


DUTIES: A combination of some of the following will comprise each week's work, alongside the writer and/or other publicist(s):

  • Assist in strategizing on book marketing plan
  • Coordinate (local and/or national) public speaking engagements, online events, media interviews, etc.
  • Help plan and implement online marketing strategy using various online tools
  • Coordinate direct mail campaigns and/or special promotions
  • Research/pursue leads concerning potential partners/affiliates
  • Assist author at selected Bay Area or online events/conferences
  • Coordinate submission and/or revision of articles for publication
  • Assist with the production and distribution/placement of marketing materials (e.g., press releases, monthly e-newsletter, ads, etc.)
  • Maintain growing mailing list and respond to book inquiries
  • Other related tasks


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interested in deepening your knowledge of the field and getting great experience in a growing socially responsible business
  • Advanced college undergraduate or degree in communications-related field
  • Strong customer service and telephone skills
  • Strong organizational skills: able to multi-task, prioritize and keep track of changing information
  • Reliable daily access to email and the web
  • Web-savvy: familiar with Internet research, professional email correspondence, databases, MS office, website, and other online technologies
  • Extremely strong writing and editing skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Resourceful
  • Self-starter: able to work with or without daily supervision
  • Background in small business marketing, public relations, and/or online marketing A PLUS
  • Sense of humor
